Step-by-Step Guide for Making Your Own Wood Pellets

This column is a beginner's introduction to wood pellet making. It also discusses the method of producing wood pellets from different forms of wood, such as round wood, wood logs, wood slabs, wood branches, wood chips, wood shavings, wood sawdust, wood leaves, and sawmill waste. A wood crusher, wood sawdust drier, wood pellet machine, wood pellet cooler, and automated packaging machine are all needed for the operation.

Producing your own wood pellets is an excellent method to lessen your carbon footprint while saving money on heating bills. But it's not as simple as purchasing a machine and clicking a button. We go into best detail in our wood pellet production guide column to help you manufacture the finest pellets possible.

Precautions in Wood Pellet Processing

To make wood pellets, the wood must be crushed and its moisture content must be regulated. The most crucial phase in the manufacturing process is biomass pelletizing, which necessitates the presence of a die and roller in the pellet machine.

  • The wood material needs to be crushed.

The raw material is crushed to make it smaller than the pellet size. For bigger wood pieces, such as logs or round wood, a wood crusher is used to crush the material into smaller wood blocks, which are then fed into a wood chipper to make chips for further usage. A wood hammer mill is used to turn wood chips into sawdust, which is required if pellets with a diameter of 6mm or less are wanted.

  • The moisture level of the water has to be kept under control.

Excess water must be removed from the raw material in order to generate quality wood pellets. A wood pellet chiller is used to remove surplus water in commercial pellet manufacturing. Smaller scale manufacturers, on the other hand, have the option of drying the material in the sun or using alternative ways.

  • Pellet mill die and roller quality

The wood material is fed via a feeder into the pelletizing chamber, where the die and rollers run at high speeds. This produces extrusion force and high temperatures, which modify the intermolecular forces in the wood substance, enhancing its flexibility. The materials are then molded into pellets by the die's hole and pushed out.

  • Cooling the completed pellets

Since the wood pellets are hot and wet after manufacture, a pellet cooler is utilized to lower the temperature and water content. A wood pellet packing machine is subsequently used to pack the pellets into plastic bags for transport or sale. Huge amounts of wood pellets are carried in bulk trucks to bulk storage containers, resulting in a more efficient processing system.
